Designer Venyx

Inspired by retrofuturism, and nourished by a rich tapestry of art, travel and history, Eugenie Niarchos’s jewelry for her brand, Venyx, is elegant in its originality. Beloved of the smart set in Paris, Rome and London, her jewels are created with deep and varied references, from sci-fi to mythology, all mixed up with a dash of fantasy.

The London-based designer launched her own brand in 2013, after spells at Repossi and Christie’s Fine Jewelry, New York. Her first collection, Reptilia, met with acclaim for its gold shield rings shaped and engraved to create the texture of shell and scales. Over subsequent collections the Venyx aesthetic developed, as she experimented with geometric gemstone cuts, unusual materials, and shapes inspired by the most weird and wonderful inhabitants of the natural world. Today, you’ll find a rainbow of gemstones, intricate details and stylized forms in talking-point jewelry that’s supremely wearable.

With her latest collection, Noir, things take a more dramatic turn; as she draws on Victorian memento mori jewels to spotlight deepest black onyx and the natural inclusions of dendritic agate. Tiny slices of agate hang on gold chains like landscape paintings in a gallery; while fern-like fronds are framed in black onyx in an octagonal signet ring. Elsewhere in this enchanting collection, white diamonds accentuate a geometric setting, to better highlight the natural patterns within. We spoke to Eugenie about the magic of materials, and the jewels that she can’t live without.

The stones and other materials you choose, and the way you combine them with different metals and gems, are a big part of the magic of Venyx. Tell me about some of the most unusual materials you have worked with.

I’ve worked with a wide variety of materials ranging from diamonds to fossilized mammoth bone. I enjoy using interesting stones such as azure malachite, howlite, and even softer materials like lava, which have all found their way into my work. Rutilated quartz is another favorite for its striking needle-like inclusions, that add texture and dimension.

Last year, I created a small suite of jewels with the Greek ocean conservation organization Bluecycle. Their ingenious process transforms discarded ocean plastics and waste from the fishing industry, into desirable, design-focused objects.

Noir explores the natural markings of dendritic agate. Why were you drawn to this stone in particular?

I love dendritic agate. My journey with it began at the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show, where I was captivated by its unique beauty. Each stone has its own character and comes with almost painterly inclusions, which tell a story within each piece.

People often think that the delicate markings within the agate are painted, however these intricate features are in fact intrinsic to the stone, created by the presence of iron oxide or manganese during the formation process.

I wove in a contemporary twist with elements of simplicity, along with the enchantment I feel for of nature’s forests and landscapes.

With dendritic agate and deep black onyx, Noir has a more dramatic feel to what we have come to expect from Venyx. Tell me about how you developed the collection.

I was keen to design a collection that was unisex; lots of my friends wear black so I wanted to explore this as a color. For Noir, my main inspiration was Victorian Memento Mori jewelry combined with my love of all things Japanese. I wove in a contemporary twist with elements of simplicity, along with the enchantment I feel for of nature’s forests and landscapes.

What are your own favorite pieces?

The Cloud Necklace. I commissioned one for myself, and I love that I was able to choose my own dendritic agate. I also love my Venyx Payal ID bracelet and my pair of Payal anklets. They’re an everyday staple for me, alongside a variety of Venyx chokers which I wear with bespoke personalized charms I designed.
